What Not to Watch

Creepy things, that's what. Dark things. Things that make you feel dirty. Shows like Dexter. I like Michael C Hall, and I think he plays Dexter extremely well, so well, in fact, that I think it's a shame that he hasn't been taking home the Emmy for it each year that he's been nominated. But, let's face it - murder is what he does, and he shows you things that one ought not see.

I had heard some buzz about the books years ago. I think there were three out at the time, so I checked out the first one from the library and was thoroughly mesmerized by it, but when I was done, I felt -- creeped out. I didn't want that stuff playing about in my brain. I decided not to read the other books. Then, when Dexter became a TV show, I watched it, and I  felt the same way. So I haven't kept up with the series for that reason alone. So why did I just watch the last episode on my computer? Did I think it would he different somehow? Not really. And it wasn't. And I promise you I will not be watching any more episodes of Dexter. Because I don't think it is good for me. Simple as that.

Good Night, TTYL and Be Well,

  1. One of my friends recommended the books to me and brought the first one over for me to read. It utterly horrified me. I find that the older I get, the worse it makes me feel to see helpless people being hurt. Even if (I think I have the premise right) they somehow 'deserve' it.

I can't watch stuff like that at all. Not good for me, either.

  2. Snap from here. I read one, was fascinated and appalled and have not/could not watch the television series. And, on a only sort of related note, I find it difficult to watch television series or movies made of books I love because they do not match my mental images.

  3. I quickly turn off TV shows with females being tortured, sex for no reason other than to show sex, children being abused, I have many deal breakers. Same with books. (I recently read 50 Shades of Grey, but it was the most boring sex EVER. I don't need to read any more. I kept reading to see what the fuss was about---still clueless.)
I agree--our brains don't need to store a lot of junk out there, especially heinous crimes. (Have never seen a single CSI) And let me tell ya, I sleep soundly at night with 99% dreams of puppy dogs and rainbows.

  4. Thank you. I don't watch a LOT of things for this very reason. I am against almost all video games for this very reason. And music. And, and, and. I suppose I sound like a conservative. Maybe I am in many ways but I feel we need to shift our brains back to dreams of puppy dogs and rainbows like Diane says. =)

  5. I agree. It's not for me either.

(And similar to Elephant's Child, I avoid movies based on books I love because they never live up to my inner movie!)
