Looting in Haiti

Last Tuesday was a bad one all around. Not only does my friend get hit while in a marked crosswalk in broad daylight in clear weather at 35 mph by an 81 year old woman driving a Subaru, Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere is devastated my a 7.0 earthquake. Please note, dear readers, that I said devastated and not decimated, as has been widely reported by news bureaus around the world. Here are your words for the day: Devastated means " 1 : to bring to ruin or desolation by violent action and 2 : to reduce to chaos, disorder, or helplessness" (which has certainly happened in Haiti). Whereas decimated means "1 : to select by lot and kill every tenth man of 2 : to exact a tax of 10 percent from 3 a : to reduce drastically especially in number decimated the population> b : to cause great destruction or harm to decimated the city> decimated by recession>." A Lot of News

I got some news today, both good and bad. Bad news first, okay? My dear friend was hit by a car last Tuesday morning at about 7:45. It was light out, and not raining (I'm pretty sure). The driver was an 81 year old woman. My friend is in the hospital with two broken legs, a broken rib or two, a broken clavicle and a 6" gash on her head. Her Mom called me with this news, and said that her gash was stitched up, the ribs and clavicle are expected to heal on their own, one leg had compound fracture/s and was operated on, and the other knee is waiting until the swelling goes down before they can work on it. Apparently she cannot move her arms, probably because of the upper body injuries - but who knows. Because of that, I haven't called her yet. I will talk with her Mom again tomorrow and check into that, and I will call the hospital and find out about visiting protocol, etc. This is not a good thing. I wouldn't wish this on anybody. But her sister came down from Alaska whe...

The middle of January

Well, damn, Where did the month go? When you don't go anywhere and you don't do anything time passes quickly. Just sayin' that I don't have anything to write about. The Winter doldrums are pretty much gone. I guess I'm feeling better in the blues department. So that is a good thing. I also have another bladder infection and am taking antibiotics again, so that is a not so good thing, but explains why I was feeling like crap for a few weeks. Not that I'm feeling so much better now. Still.... I have crocheted another hat for myself. This one has ear flaps! I know. What is a 54 year old woman thinking about when she makes such a thing? She is thinking that in cold weather, her ears get cold. She is thinking function over form. She is thinking how could she design a hat with a nose warmer. That's what she is thinking - and she made them so they can be neatly tucked in when not needed. How about that? Genius, no? Next I think I want to make a coffee cozy. And le...
