Fireworks!

I grew up on Queen Anne Hill in Seattle about a half mile walk to Kerry Park, the prime viewpoint for the Fourth of Jul-Ivar's fireworks display, (click to see full size)
Ivar's being a Seattle seafood restaurant and institution. After our family BBQ, once it was getting dark, we would all walk down to get our spot and watch the display. I remember the fireworks forming pictures of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and the Liberty Bell and the Statue of Liberty and the American Flag. My husband tells me this couldn't possibly be true, but I've asked my older brother and he remembers it that way, too. At least I feel vindicated.

Ivar's has decided not to offer a display this year for the first time in probably 50 years! But for the past 20 some years, we've had another display on Lake Union - the WAMU Family Fourth. When I first met DH he was living just a block from the Lake. We could see it from our second floor balcony, but unfortunately trees and apartment buildings blocked our view of the fireworks. Oh well. We all know what happened to WAMU this year, but fortunately Chase has stepped up to the plate and is sponsoring the display on Lake Union.

These days, life being what it is, I must remain content to watch the fireworks on TV. They sure beat the homespun displays of the past several years at DH's brother's house. Driveway fireworks stopped being fun for me once I came of age. I just hate to see $200 go up in smoke like that. Sincerely.

So this year, while neighbors shot off their displays beyond the bushes and trees and corners in my neighborhood that blocked my view, I watched the Chase Family Fourth on King-5 TV, right after I watched the Macy's display on the Hudson in New York. The NYC display sponsored by Macy's was BORING! It was HO HUM. It was nearly monochromatic and repetitive.

The Chase display in Seattle this year, on the other hand, superceded all expectations. It was Marvelous! And that's all I have to say about that, except that I checked YouTube and didn't find a really good video of it - so you'll have to be satisfied with last year's which wasn't as good. Maybe tomorrow some will be posted of this year's.

Good Night, TTYL and Be Well

  1. I feel the same way about watching so much money go up in smoke. It is pretty though. I know the kids love it.
