Is News Biased?
I was just over at Bitchypoo.com and in her comments someone posted this link

of all the front pages the day after the election. I admit that I just glanced at a few, but I was sorely disappointed to see so few pictures of our new President and/or first family. My own Tacoma paper had a photo of polls workers counting ballots with a headline complaining that out new ranked voting system was taking longer to tally. Well, really? Do you think?
The result of this election, NO MATTER WHICH SIDE WON, was headline banner news. Our nation's FIRST Afro-American President - or our FIRST FEMALE vice-president; either way it was precedent setting. After spending some time glancing the 672 front pages, I was still annoyed and confused in some cases. Like, why does Iran have Obama facing away from you? Why do so many papers have the announcement in a sidebar with no photo at all? And why is some of the best front page coverage from other countries? Like India, or Netherlands? It's a conundrum. My knee-jerk reaction is to play the race card. But I won't go that far.
Frankly, I am disgusted with our media-biased news coverage in general, which is why, I suppose I only listen to public radio. The "regular" stations all are biased one way or another. Give me coverage from BBC anytime.

Of course it's biased. Just look at the coverage during the election. Of course, my husband was "spot on" as the Brits say. He predicted that as soon as the election was over so to would the press love affair with Obama. They could get away with the obvious bias during the election, most don't pay attention. It would become too obvious after the election and he would simply become another target, just like every president before him. Besides that, there is incredible pressure on him and NO ONE can do what voters want him to. Which is fix ALL the problems by the end of the first week in office. It's going to take years to turn things around and we're not known as a nation of patient folks. I don't envy Obama his new job.
ReplyDeleteThat's why I don't read the paper and I watch the news with the sound off! (Well, that and I'm truly a bit weird...sigh)
