I Can READ!

What is it they say about the third time? OH! It's a charm. Well, we'll see about that.

I've written this entry
twice, and even added some (lousy) pictures, then punched something and they disappeared. POOF! Is this some kind of Halloween joke? That was yesterday, and now I have only a vague idea what I wrote. I think it was this.

Quite some years ago my neurologist put me on Zoloft. I started at 50 mg. which did nothing for me so we upped it to 100 mg. and after another three weeks I noticed a big difference. At the time I was still working part time, and bought my books. I kept them in two piles - already read, and to be read. The to be read pile seemed always to be three times as tall as the already read pile. It was the story of my life at that time. Poor concentration, lack of interest, ennui. But three weeks of 100 mg, Zoloft and I went to get a book from the pile, and noticed that they had switched! I had read more books than were waiting to be read.

Cut to several years hence, and I felt I was doing well enough I could taper off the Zoloft, which I did and managed quite well for a couple of years. But I noticed last Spring/Summer that old friend ENNUI creeping into my psyche again. Now, not working, I get my books from the library, and I have developed a pattern of renewing them, because three weeks is not long enough for me to finish a damned book.

This August I took my last bottle of 100 mg. pills and I felt no difference in my mood or demeanor at all! I mentioned this at my last Neuro appt. on 9/29 and he suggested that I up it to 150 mg. and report back to him in a month. Well I am happy to report that, once again, I can read. In the last week, I finished
Unaccustomed Earth and am more than halfway through A Handbook To Luck. Not too bad for a slow reader! And while my MS related recall issues remain, keeping me from telling you any coherent details about either of them except that the first is about East Indians living in America and the second is about characters in Iran, El Salvadore and America, I surely enjoyed/am enjoying them.

Also, keeping with the international theme, I had lunch with two friends today at Nelshil's Cafe (at 56th and Orchard - behind the 7-11). It's a Ghanian (West African) restaurant, and we each enjoyed it very much. I'll be having some Goat Soup for lunch tomorrow.

Ditto for our Burning Bush out front; It's really deep red.

I guess the third time really IS a charm!

Good Night, TTYL and Be Well
