Out and about
Yesterday I took my inaugural ride around the neighborhood on my new-to-me scooter. The great outdoors is now mine to have. The scooter takes bumps and gravel alleys well, and as it didn't even occur to me to take along my cell phone, DH was home worryin' and frettin' about his long lost wife who was gone SO LONG she must be in trouble somewhere. Note: he wasn't concerned enough to get his butt in the car and canvas the neighborhood, however, so I take all his protests with a very large grain of salt. Seriously.
So, I was gone about 90 minutes or two hours or so. Just tooling up one block here, down one alley there, going South to 72nd and over as far as Clement and as far North as far as 62nd. I chatted with one neighbor who I know, and met a new one who has lived in her house for 50 years. Her house looks a helluva lot better than mine, though they are both small and the same shade of yellow.
I have determined that my front yard is the worst in the entire neighborhood. The. Worst. It's so embarrassing to me; not that I can't do anything about it, but that DH won't do anything about it. The once pretty ivy is now threatening to take over the front stairs, and the front walkway has narrowed because the junipers which line the sidewalk haven't been trimmed in years. I feel bad for the mailman who must climb those few stairs each day, either scratching his legs in warm weather, or getting wet when it rains.
My neighborhood has had several curb cuts installed, but they are hit and miss. Going up to the Starbuck's is within my reach, but if there's no cut or ramp to the building's entrance I'd be SOL once I got there. I suppose I could beep my horn to get someone's attention [NO, I'm not above doing that!], they could come out, take my card and fill my order and I'd be on my way. I could go to the bargain market and get a gallon of milk and some cookies and bananas. That's all the way up to 56th, kittycorner from the library. DH would probably go apoplectic if I told him I crossed busy 56th St. Note - there is a light, but no curb cut. I'd have to get clever with driveways and whatnot.
But it was nice to be out and about in the neighborhood. Some kids were friendly, with a wave and a "Hi" while others kept their distance and pretty much looked at me while I went by. Such an oddity. Never seen that before. What could it be?
Note to self: I will tale my cell phone with me next time - just in case I tip over, or get threatened by a gang of thugs. I wish I could take my walker on it somehow. At least then I could actually go in to a place once I got there. Only the library and Bargain Market have electric doors.
Bottom line - two thumbs up. Will work out the details as I roll along.
