I've Been Away

I think I've been lost in a fog because I can't tell you where I've been. I finished two more hats, and gave them to my sisters to take to the craft bazaar which happens next weekend. Someone bought one of them at the meeting for $10! I said, "I'm only charging $7.50!" but I was told I couldn't lower an offered price!  So, I've sold at least one of the seven I donated.

Lets see, on Nov. 7 there was a reception for my nephew who got married on Maui on September 12.  I couldn't afford to go, and probably couldn't handle the heat and humidity of Hawaii even if I could have gone. Oh well. It was nice to see the two of them. They've been living together for ten years, so it's about time they got married. Perhaps they're thinking of having a baby? That's what I'm thinking. Both his brother and sister have had their first kids this year, and his cousin had one too, so it's going around.

Sometimes I wish we had chosen to have children.  I've certainly made plenty of mistakes with birth control over the years, so I kind of think that if it was meant to be, it would have happened; Especially after I turned 40 I got really lax. I assumed I was in menopause because my periods stopped, but my GYN told me that I was still fertile and to be careful. I pooh-poohed that and wasn't careful, and still nothing happened. So then, no children for me. I guess that's the way we planned it. I just wonder if DH would have ended up in this depressive funk if there were children to take care of. Would they have been motivation enough for him to get off his butt? I know, it's an imponderable.

I don't know what I am doing for the holidays. Thanksgiving at my cousin's again is a definite possibility. My brother who lives in Japan is coming to stay with his daughter in Anacortes for Christmas; it's the big surprise for the grandkids, and the whole family is invited for a big gathering. But it is 2-3 hours away, so I don't know whether I'll be going or not. It will also depend on the weather. Apparently the very northwest part of Washington got a bit of snow last night, and sub-freezing temperatures are  predicted for all of Washington tomorrow and Monday. So how the weather will be in four weeks is any body's guess. Also, I haven't asked my other brother what his plans are. So all that means who knows what I'll be doing.

I am almost halfway through Fall of Giants by Ken Follett. I am enjoying it, and wondering where truth leaves off and fiction begins. I guess that's what I like most about historical fiction. You learn a lot about what happened during a certain time, in this part of the book it's  WWI in England, but it's not as dry as studying it the history books. I think this book is part of a trilogy.

Since I started writing this post on Saturday night, we have gotten the promised snowfall. It's been spotty to be sure, but the ice is everywhere. The good responsible workers who couldn't take a day off ended up stranded in pile-ups on the freeways. It was the usual chaotic mess that is the definition of snow in Western Washington. Even when I did work, after MS, if there was a little snow on the ground, I called in and said I'd be in another day. Way back before I had MS, I didn't have a car, so I was dependent on the buses. Sometimes I had to walk a little farther to get to a snow route, but I didn't mind too much. I thought of it as an adventure. Oh, to be young and healthy again.

I did manage to motivate myself to make another apple crisp this evening. I had to before the apples went bad; they were starting to show a few wrinkles as it was! This time I used Jonagold apples and in addition to the regular recipe I tossed in some granola and added some apple cider and it was delicious. And that was what was for dinner.

Right now it's a fucking 12 degrees outside and is apt to get colder in the next four hours! I'm going to cuddle under my fleece blanket and my down comforter.

Good Night, TTYL and Be Well,

  1. Hi Webster,
Good to catch up on your news. So glad to hear you got snow..hehe.

Yummers, apple crisp. Love it and Jonagolds are Hubbers fave apple.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving and keep warm.

    Cheers,
    Karen

  3. We crept home on Monday night, then took two snow days. Even UW suspended classes -- I don't remember that ever happening at Michigan State. We are getting to be such weather weenies! Mouse

  4. Forgot to dish up any apple crisp today, Karen. Tomorrow it's breakfast food! Don't remember what apples I used last time, but Jonagolds worked better - also added a little spiced cider. Juicy!

Sorry Sherri, you'll just have to enjoy it vicariously. You haven't packed away all your warmies, have you?

Zoomer, aren't most Michigan towns and cities a little flatter than Seattle? I'm sure they also have more snow removal equipment available to them. Still, it always surprises me how the smallest amount of snow can cause such problems. After getting caught up in it, I'd take a couple days off as well.

  5. As much as I love venting on my blog, I find I need little breaks now and again. I miss it if I'm away too long.

Well, anyway, I hope you keep warm and have a great Thanksgiving. It's supposed to be 70 degrees here. Then tomorrow a high in the 40s. What strange weather!

  6. I lived in Ann Arbor and Indiana, and yeah, 3ft of snow--no big deal. Ice? Buses still ran. It is all about the flat vs hills, though I watched a clueless driver try to get around a corner yesterday...anyway, whatever you do--Enjoy! Happy Day!

  7. I could swear I already commented on this one but umm maybe it went into cyber sock land along with all the missing socks from the washer?

I see your not passing out apple crisp so my wanting some would get me no where.

Snow - we hardly ever get any here but the way it shaping up this year so far maybe we will.

If it really snowed here the city would probably shut down. It would be fun to watch the folks deal with it.

  8. One more thing... I just picked up Fall of Giants at the library. It's next on my list, after The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest. So many books, so little time...

  11. Hi there, I sure hope it's warmed up a bit in your neck of the woods. It's too early for a big winter storm as far as I'm concerned.

Your apple crisp sounds fabulous. I have some apples calling my name and I think I'll make some too. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Feel good, jj
